As early as the 1730s, the first porcelain manufactory in Europe began creating birds in porcelain-an endeavor significantly shaped by Johann Joachim Kaendler. His works were produced, among other places, for the Japanese Palace in Dresden and laid the foundation for the Meissen tradition of bird sculpture that remains important to this day.

Continuing in this tradition is the Green Woodpecker figurine in Meissen porcelain, height 10.6 in. (27 cm). The green woodpecker is one of the most striking native woodpecker species, especially known for its vibrant green plumage and distinctive red crown. With its strong beak and long tongue, it is perfectly adapted for feeding on ants, which make up a large portion of its diet.

Based on intensive studies of nature, the characteristic bird is depicted in a lively pose with remarkable attention to detail. The refined modeling, the precise rendering of the plumage and body form, and the nuanced, richly colored hand-painting give the figure an impressive sense of realism.
